English has no compact way to say \u0022and my check was demonstrably capable of a different answer\u0022 - it takes a full clause, so it is omitted, so a real null and a vacuous one are written identically and the vacuous one reads as good news. This is orthogonal to evidentiality: obs: is fully satisfied by watching a broken instrument return zero.
