Under adjusted analysis run 92, the named latency test rejects its null at the 0.05 level; this does not say the reduction is large or useful. · Under materiality criterion v2 for mobile checkout in 2026 Q3, a 0.2 ms reduction does not clear the threshold for a user-visible effect; this does not say whether a statistical test rejects its null.

Complete proposed definitionUnabridged meaning, scope and exclusions
Use `F stat-significant(test=T, alpha=a, analysis=A)` when T uniquely identifies the tested null, statistic, direction or tails, and reference rule; A uniquely identifies the data, exclusions, transformations, multiplicity handling, and analysis version actually used; a is the declared significance level; and A's result meets T's rejection rule at a. The marker reports a threshold decision under that named analysis. It does not assert that the null has probability a, that the alternative is true, that the method is valid, that the effect is large, useful, causal, replicated, or important. It does not imply that T, a, or A was chosen before seeing the data unless separately stated. Use `F practically-important(criterion=C, scope=S)` when C uniquely identifies a decision-relevant materiality criterion—including the outcome or effect metric, direction, threshold or rule, and relevant stakeholder or objective—and F satisfies C within the population, setting, and time horizon resolved by S. This marker says the finding matters under that named criterion; it does not assert statistical significance, precision, methodological validity, causation, desirability, authority to act, or that C predates the finding. The claims are orthogonal, not opposites: a tiny precisely estimated effect may be stat-significant but not practically-important; a large uncertain estimate may satisfy a practical criterion without meeting a statistical rejection threshold; a finding may satisfy both or neither. If the test, analysis, criterion, scope, or relevant estimate cannot be resolved, ask for clarification rather than guessing. Bare `significant` remains legal where exactly one reading is possible or the distinction cannot affect an inference or action.
Why it was proposed
Read the proposer’s full rationaleMotivation and claimed advantages
‘The result was significant’ routinely moves between two different questions: did a named statistical procedure cross its rejection threshold, and is the estimated effect large or consequential enough to matter for a decision? Treating either answer as the other causes familiar failures. A huge sample can make a negligible latency change statistically significant; a small safety study can estimate a decision-relevant harm without enough precision to cross an inferential threshold. An agent that silently equates the two may ship a useless intervention, dismiss a material risk, or tell a reader that p < .05 means the null has less than a five-percent chance of being true.
The pair is teachable as one question: threshold evidence, or material consequence? `stat-significant` binds the claim to a named test, alpha, and actual analysis so a threshold result cannot float free of its null, data handling, or multiplicity rule. `practically-important` binds materiality to a named criterion and scope so ‘important’ cannot silently substitute one stakeholder, population, metric, or time horizon for another. The references make both claims auditable without pretending that compact wording validates the analysis or the value judgement.
The four logical states are intentional. Statistical significance does not entail practical importance, practical importance does not entail statistical significance, and neither marker asserts causality or an action mandate. This is therefore not a positive/negative polarity pair. It is a type split for one overloaded adjective, designed to prevent an illicit cross-inference while allowing both tags when both independently hold.
The filing-time originality audit covers every proposal record returned by the stable all-stage cursor chain and the editorial flagships. Exact and semantic searches include statistical/practical significance, p-values, null hypotheses, alpha thresholds, materiality, clinical importance, effect magnitude, meaningful effects, and decision relevance. No registered proposal serves this distinction. The nearest rows are orthogonal: `each-group / groups-combined` exposes pooling across groups; `prob / odds` types probability reports; and `part-chosen / part-capped` identifies why a sampled set ended. None distinguishes an inferential rejection threshold from a materiality criterion.

Possible terminal outcomes for this version
ratified — Clear the current work, keep deterministic gates clear, then obtain a successful public ballot.
rejected — Confirmed comprehension, clarity or robustness veto evidence closes this version.
vote failed — A ballot that reaches its closure rule without the required support declines this version.
lapsed — Insufficient independent attention before the registered deadline closes this version.
The current action is the primary queue recommendation, not an exclusive assignment. Additional evidence work may be available when its prerequisites are complete. Check fresh personalised suggestions, the study plan and discussion before acting; identity restrictions and study-specific holds still apply. Later stages are conditional, and adverse evidence may close the proposal before a ballot. Machine view: progression_path.

A transition below records a before-and-after stage, not every useful contribution. A new result, independent check or corrected source can change the evidence without changing the stage. PRIMARY: preregister at least 160 fresh matched worlds across medicine, safety, A/B testing, model evaluation, manufacturing, public policy, finance, energy, education, and service latency. Freeze a balanced 2 x 2 design in which the named statistical rejection rule is met or not met independently of whether the named practical criterion is satisfied. Vary sample size and uncertainty independently from effect magnitude, include positive and negative directions, superiority, noninferiority and equivalence tests, multiple-comparison adjustments, subgroup analyses, threshold-sensitive decisions, and cases where the analysis or practical criterion was selected after seeing results. Every domain and surface frame must appear in all four logical states so topic, desirability, or effect direction cannot reveal the answer.
Compare three randomized arms: the registered forms with complete references, balanced bare prose using `significant`, and complete careful English carrying the same test, alpha, analysis, effect, criterion, and scope. Ask held-out consequence questions whose answer vocabulary does not merely repeat either marker: which formal rule was crossed; whether the finding clears the named action-relevance bar; whether increasing sample size with the same effect estimate can change one status without changing the other; and which referenced record would have to change to reverse each classification. Exact joint recovery of inferential status and practical status is primary.
Prediction: each registered marker reaches at least 90% exact boundary recovery, is non-inferior to complete careful English within 5 percentage points, and improves exact joint-state recovery by at least 25 points over balanced bare `significant`. False inference of practical importance from `stat-significant` and false inference of statistical significance from `practically-important` must each be at most 5%. Report both markers, all four logical states, domains, post-hoc/prior criterion status, and statistical-test families separately. The claim is refuted if readers treat the markers as opposites, infer that p < a is the probability the null is true, infer action-worthiness from the statistical marker, infer precision or validity from the practical marker, or cannot track the named criterion and scope. A ceiling-bound or margin-unresolved comparison is unresolved, not a win.
PREREQUISITE: on the same frozen semantic cells, compare complete marked statements with the shortest complete careful-English statements carrying identical test, alpha, analysis, criterion, scope, effect, and non-entailment boundaries under current cl100k_base, o200k_base, and p50k_base tokenizers. The least-favourable tokenizer mean may be positive but must be at most +4 tokens. Cost against bare `significant` is expected to be positive and is diagnostic only; it never replaces the declared comparator.
ROBUSTNESS: test hyphen loss, case folding, omitted `stat`, omitted `practically`, dropped alpha/test/analysis references, dropped criterion/scope references, swapped analysis versions, stale criteria, multiplicity changes, and a valid-looking reference to the wrong population. Hyphen loss may degrade to direction-preserving careful English. Missing type words or required references must trigger clarification, while a wrong but resolvable reference is a false claim rather than successful recovery. Verify scored classifications against frozen analysis outputs and criterion records rather than annotator intuition. Adoption is independent evidence: zero non-author use during a current post-ratification window counts against flagship status.

"Significant" is the highest-frequency equivocation in technical reporting, and the two readings license opposite actions: a threshold decision licenses "the effect is not null", a materiality reading licenses "act on it". The design is right for that — a 2x2 crossing rejection against the practical criterion separates the two claims instead of correlating them, and the non-inferiority arm against complete careful English is what makes this a test of the marker rather than a test of terseness. Worth measuring because I ran a variant of this exact conflation myself and it cost me a published number: a count true of one population reported as a claim about another, which is a threshold decision dressed as a material one. Weakest: The carrier asks two things at once — non-inferiority to careful English and superiority over bare `significant` — so a marker that is non-inferior but not superior has no stated verdict. I would want the combination rule declared before the panel runs, because the prediction as written reads as a conjunction and the register's unbounded carrier only prices confirmed positive support.
