A renewed certificate may remove the reason without changing when a policy began; a coincident migration can start the observed interval without having caused the policy. Yet a reader, parser, or agent receiving bare `since` must silently choose. In handoffs, incident reports, policy summaries, and status updates, that choice changes which follow-up is rational: investigate a cause, ask for an onset, test current persistence, or remove a condition.
The repair is deliberately boring and teachable. English already has a causal connective that does not also mean ‘from that time’: `because`. English already has an overtly durative temporal phrase: `ever since`. Ainglish can select those two established surfaces and refuse the polysemous shorthand only where both readings are live. A human can understand the whole proposal from one question: did `since` give a reason, or start a clock? The cost is at most one extra word against bare `since`, while the complete careful-English mappings are much longer.
Scope honesty matters. `Because` can introduce a physical cause, a speaker’s evidence, or another explanatory ground; this row does not claim to solve that finer relation inventory. `Ever since` often invites a conversational causal association even though it does not entail one; that possible over-reading is a primary falsifier, not something the form definition wishes away. Temporal `since` also has aspect constraints: ‘ever since the restart, the alert fired once’ is malformed for a through-now interval and must be repaired with `after` or an exact time. The convention therefore targets finite subordinate clauses and event references whose causal and temporal readings are both plausible, not every occurrence of the string.
Originality audit draft: immediately before filing, enumerate every proposal at every lifecycle stage plus the editorial flagships and search substantive fields for temporal since, causal since, ever since, since-cause, since-time, reason versus time, and cause versus clock. The current 232-record scan found no construct serving this distinction. Nearby constructs are orthogonal: `caused-by / co-occurring` types an asserted relation between named claims; `cause-question / justification-question` types the answer requested by ‘why?’; `as_of / until` pins an evidence epoch or expiry; and `start-by / complete-by` says which task event a deadline constrains. Every scenario ledger independently fixes two binary axes: whether the subordinate event explains the main claim, and whether it begins a through-reference-time interval in which the main predicate continuously holds or repeatedly occurs. Balance the four cells—reason only, interval only, both, neither—and balance clause order, polarity, event/result order, aspect, and domain. Compare bare ambiguous `since` with the meaning-matched repair (`because` for reason-only; `ever since` for interval-only), both-claims wording for the both cell, and a full careful-English mapping. Neither surface nor question may contain the answer labels. Ask held-out readers: (1) does the sentence say the subordinate event explains why the main claim holds; (2) does it say the main condition has held or recurred from that event through the reference time; (3) would the sentence still be compatible with the condition having begun earlier; and (4) does it assert that the event is the only explanation. Exact two-axis recovery is primary. Report each form, domain, axis cell, clause order, aspect class, and reader lineage separately.
Predictions: each repaired form improves exact two-axis recovery by at least 20 percentage points over bare `since` on both-readings-live cells and is non-inferior to its full careful-English mapping within 5 points. `Because` must not create a through-now onset claim above the careful-English error floor. `Ever since` must not create a causal/explanatory claim more than 5 points above its careful-English mapping. Both-claims wording must recover both axes rather than forcing readers to choose one. Type-forced date and duration controls should gain under 5 points, demonstrating that the convention does not tax already clear uses. Aspect-malformed temporal fixtures must be rejected or repaired rather than confidently interpreted.
PREREQUISITE: on a separate frozen set of at least 48 complete mappings, balanced by form and domain, report `token_delta` under cl100k_base and o200k_base. The least-favourable lineage mean must be at most 0 against full careful English; report the extra cost against bare `since` separately and honestly (predicted 0 for `because`, about +1 word for `ever since`). Robustness repeats matched cells after punctuation loss, clause-order reversal, contraction expansion, and one-word deletion; losing `ever` should widen back to ambiguous `since`, not be scored as the opposite relation.
REFUTED OR NARROWED if either repair fails the 20-point gain; trails careful English by more than 5 points; `ever since` induces causal attribution beyond the declared tolerance; `because` induces a through-now interval; readers cannot recover both axes when both are stated; type-forced controls materially improve; the aspect gate accepts malformed claims; the careful-mapping token prerequisite is positive; fewer than 144 both-readings-live items survive blinded admissibility review; or independent trigger-conditioned use remains zero after ratification.
