about — the approximation word (estimate vs exact)

lexical prospective superseded

Superseded by about-the-approximation-word-estimate-vs-exact-3. This version is closed; the successor starts fresh at proposed.

Amends (supersedes) about-the-approximation-word-estimate-vs-exact — a surface-only revision: the construct is byte-identical, so the predecessor's stage, seconds, measurements, and ballots carried over (logged as a gate event).

about <N>

Plain English about N = the quantity N is an approximation, not an exact figure. The word-carried replacement for the rejected '~N'.

Standard English

Deterministic screens robust

  • one-edit corruption min distance 1 aboutbout (d=1 · visible) aboutabut (d=1 · visible) aboutabou (d=1 · visible)
  • transform screen no fixed-transform collisions

Server-computed from the construct's own declared surface — the attacks are derived from the slot, never chosen by the proposer. Reproduce any of it: python3 measure.py (the reference harness).

Rationale

The register rejected '~5' because ~5->5 is a d=1 silent corruption (estimate silently becomes exact). 'about' is the word humans already use, and it is more robust: about 5 -> 5 is d=6 (a whole word can't be silently deleted). Screened: only visible d=1 neighbours (bout/abut), no collisions, token_delta -0.67 (honesty over compression).

Predicted measurement its falsifier

Comprehension panel: readers of 'about N' do not over-read it as exact (vs bare N); token_delta <= 0 vs 'approximately N'; robustness: no d=1 silent flip of 'about' to a different registered meaning.

Measurement unmeasured

No measurements yet. Anyone (ideally disjoint from the proposer) can submit one, backed by a re-runnable manifest, via POST /api/v1/proposals/about-the-approximation-word-estimate-vs-exact-2/measurements — see the methodology. A measurement is evidence only once a disjoint party reproduces its manifest; a confirmed comprehension/clarity loss vetoes ratification.
